What changed in 3.0
For stores that used SKU Manager before 3.0: where each feature went, and what happened to your presets, rules and plan.
SKU Manager 3.0 brings bulk updates and automatic SKUs together in one place: rules. The Update page and Automate are gone. A rule now does both, writing SKUs when you run it and, if you set it to Automatic, for new products as they're added. Your presets and rules came across with you.
Your presets and rules
- Each preset is now a format with the same name, on the Formats page.
- Each Automate rule is now a rule, in the same order, with a format of its own named after it. Its counter carries on from where it left off rather than starting again.
- A rule for any product or variant now applies to Everything else, at the bottom of your rules.
- Rules that were active while Automate was on are set to Automatic, and rules that were disabled are paused. Every other rule is Manual, which means it writes only when you run it.
- Rules that wrote SKUs and barcodes have Write each SKU to the barcode too checked. Each SKU they write is added to the variant's barcodes, beside any already there, and the barcode a rule wrote before 3.0 is updated rather than kept beside the new one. See Running a rule.
- Conditionals that checked when a product was created or updated were removed, since a format can't depend on dates in 3.0.
Your history
Updates made before 3.0 aren't on the Activity page, so they can't be undone from SKU Manager. The Activity page begins with your first run in 3.0.
Where each feature went
| Before 3.0 | In 3.0 |
|---|---|
| Update page | The Rules page. Create a rule, preview it and run it. To update once without keeping a rule, uncheck Keep this rule in the Confirm section before you run it. |
| Selecting products and filtering the product list | A rule's conditions, which can also pick out some of a product's variants, like "Color is Red" |
| Combo boxes | The parts of a format |
| Static | Text part |
| Increment, Increment by product, Increment by variant | Counter part, counting Across everything, Per product or Per variant |
| Conditional mode and its rules | Conditional part, and its conditions |
| Separators in the Toolbox | Separators between the parts of any format |
| Presets | Formats, on the Formats page |
| Examples | Your first format is filled in from your own SKUs, or from an example built from your products |
| Override in the Toolbox | Not needed. The format editor warns when a format could repeat SKUs, and never stops you saving. |
| Format mode: change case, find and replace | Not in 3.0 |
| Choosing to update SKUs or barcodes | A rule writes SKUs, and with Write each SKU to the barcode too checked in the Confirm section, adds each SKU to the variant's barcodes as well. Barcodes can't be written on their own. |
| Automate's Overview status | Automatic, switched on for each rule |
| Automate's Rules | The Rules page |
| Queued, with Update now and Forget | The Waiting tab on the Activity page, with Write SKUs now and Skip |
| Automate's History | The Runs tab on the Activity page |
| Restore, restore points and saved restore points | Undo on every run on the Activity page, with Redo, and Stop this from expiring to keep an undo |
| Override restore points | Not needed. Every run can be undone. |
| Duplicate check | The Duplicates page, and the duplicate count in SKU health |
| Only update duplicates | Resolve duplicates, which keeps one variant per repeated SKU and rewrites the others |
| Re-sync products | Resync products, at the top of the Rules page, which you'll rarely need now |
Your plan
Plans are now priced by the size of your store, in managed variants, which are the variants in your store not counting archived products. Every plan includes every feature, and what a plan decides is the size of store it fits.
- If you were on Standard or Complete, your plan is now called Growing (Legacy). You keep the price you pay now, for a store of any size, with Growing's speed and undo window: new products get SKUs within 20 minutes, and runs can be undone for 10 days. Growing (Legacy) isn't offered anymore, so if you choose another plan you can't switch back to it.
- If you were on Trial, you're now on Free. Free covers everything for stores under 500 managed variants. A bigger store can write its first 500 SKUs free, then needs the plan that fits its size.
See Plans and pricing.
Recommendations
- Check the order of your rules on the Rules page. They came across in the same order, and order now decides which rule writes each variant's SKU. See Rules.
- Look at SKU health at the top of the Rules page. It shows missing, shared and out-of-format SKUs across your whole store, without running a check.
- Decide which rules should be Automatic. Only rules that were active while Automate was on came across as Automatic.
- Used a preset for one-off updates? Select Create rule with this format in its ⋯ menu on the Formats page, then uncheck Keep this rule in the Confirm section to run it once.
- Wrote barcodes with SKU Manager? Check Write each SKU to the barcode too in the Confirm section of the rules that should. Rules that wrote both SKUs and barcodes before 3.0 have it checked already.
Things that work differently
- You don't need to resync before a run. Product changes reach SKU Manager automatically. The exception is changes to which collections products are in, which need Resync products.
- There's no product list to pick from. A rule's conditions say which products it applies to.
- Each variant belongs to one rule: the first one in your list that matches it.
- Automatic only fills in missing SKUs. It never changes a SKU a variant already has.
- Resolving duplicates follows each variant's rule. Of the variants sharing a SKU, the one on the product added first keeps it, and the others are rewritten in their own rule's format.
